Summary

8 hours and 54 minutes

Performed by Anna Cordell and Dov Forman featuring a foreword written and read by Charles HRH The Prince of Wales and dedication written and read by Lily Ebert。

In this life-affirming intergenerational memoir, Lily Ebert, a Holocaust survivor, and her great-grandson, Dov Forman, come together to share her story—an unforgettable tale of resilience and resistance。

On Yom Kippur, 1944, fighting to stay alive as a prisoner in Auschwitz, Lily Ebert made a promise to herself。 She would survive the hell she was in and tell the world her story, for everyone who couldn't。 Now, at 98, this remarkable woman—and TikTok sensation, thanks to the help of her 18-year-old great-grandson—fulfills that vow, relaying the details of her harrowing experience with candor, charm, and an overflowing heart。

In 'LILY'S PROMISE', she writes movingly about her happy childhood in Hungary, the death of her mother and two youngest siblings on their arrival at Auschwitz in 1944, and her determination to keep her two other sisters safe。 She describes the inhumanity of the camp and the small acts of defiance that gave her strength。 Lily lost so much, but she built a new life for herself and her family, first in Israel and then in London。

Dov knows that it is up to younger people like him to keep Lily's promise。 He and Lily bridge the generation gap to share her experience, reminding us of the joy that accompanies the solemn responsibility of keeping the past—and our stories—alive。

An endearing memoir by a 98 year old survivor of the Holocaust。 You just fall in love with Lily and how she helps her sisters survive living in Auschwitz during WWII。 Lily's great grandson writes this story with Lily after finding out about her past, one that was hidden from her family for years。 It is well done and an easy read about a horrible time in history。 I love Lily and her strenghth and resilience。 An endearing memoir by a 98 year old survivor of the Holocaust。 You just fall in love with Lily and how she helps her sisters survive living in Auschwitz during WWII。 Lily's great grandson writes this story with Lily after finding out about her past, one that was hidden from her family for years。 It is well done and an easy read about a horrible time in history。 I love Lily and her strenghth and resilience。 。。。more

I was torn for a bit on whether this work deserved a fourth star as "really liked" but settled on three as the story, while certainly well done, seems not to break new ground in telling yet another Holocaust story。 It was not until I finished that I noticed the publisher's claim that the story has captured notice on TikTok in a supposed sensational way。 Perhaps that is worth a look, but not now。 The listener who has never contemplated the Holocaust will almost certainly cringe from time to time I was torn for a bit on whether this work deserved a fourth star as "really liked" but settled on three as the story, while certainly well done, seems not to break new ground in telling yet another Holocaust story。 It was not until I finished that I noticed the publisher's claim that the story has captured notice on TikTok in a supposed sensational way。 Perhaps that is worth a look, but not now。 The listener who has never contemplated the Holocaust will almost certainly cringe from time to time at the level of cruelty that one might encounter in human relationships。 。。。more

I got an ARC of this book。 The book switches between Lily and her grandson。 It was interesting to see the story from two perspectives, but I didn't need the grandson's perspective。 It didn't really add more information or do anything but be a different voice suddenly。 It didn't even seem to happen at a natural break in the story。 Honestly, all of my complaints about this book are that Ebert is generally not an amazing writer or there were weird choices, like her grandson having chapters。 The sto I got an ARC of this book。 The book switches between Lily and her grandson。 It was interesting to see the story from two perspectives, but I didn't need the grandson's perspective。 It didn't really add more information or do anything but be a different voice suddenly。 It didn't even seem to happen at a natural break in the story。 Honestly, all of my complaints about this book are that Ebert is generally not an amazing writer or there were weird choices, like her grandson having chapters。 The story itself stands out as different than other memoirs as it seems evenly split between before the war, during the war, and the rest of Ebert's life。 It gave an impressive story of someone's whole life, some that survived something unimaginable and kept surviving every day since。 I am so thankful for Ebert for telling her story。 。。。more

Dov was also a great narrator。 And hearing Lily reading the dedication of the book warmed my heart。 。。。more

I have read many Holocaust books, but what makes this one so different is that it is one of the few that goes on to tell about the hardships many faced after they were liberated。 It’s also one of very few accounts written by a survivor。 I imagine this was so hard to relive while writing it, but I’m thankful that Lily and Dov shared this story with the world。
